Support county Council on Aging

This seems to be the time of year when more people are thinking of giving to charity. There’s an old saying that “charity begins at home.” When one thinks of giving, it might be wise to define “home” to include local area charitable organizations.

It was once said that a country should be judged on how it treats its most vulnerable citizens – the children, the infirmed and the aged. One local group operating pretty much under the radar and not widely publicized is the La Plata Council on Aging, a 501(c)(3) organization. COA membership is open to anyone in our area, and yearly membership is currently just $2 per year. It’s an all-volunteer group, led by a board of directors and operates out of our local Durango Senior Center at 2424 Main Avenue. The COA helps support programs and services for all three senior centers in the county – Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio.

Contributions to the three centers from COA include salad bars, wheelchairs, exercise equipment and much, much more. You don’t have to be a senior to join COA or help our local senior programs; membership forms for 2015 are available at the Durango Senior Center. While you are there, visit our “best little thrift shop in Durango,” a small but mighty enterprise helping support COA. With each passing day, everyone hopefully will have the distinction of attaining senior status, so COA is truly a win-win organization! Check out the website at laplatacoa.com.
