Chapman closed for holiday

Pace Thompson, 4, and his dad, Ben Thompson, didn’t get to Chapman Hill in time to use the tow rope on Wednesday afternoon, so they ascended the hill under their own power, allowing them to get a few good runs in. Pace’s mom is Lauren Thompson. Because of a warm December, Chapman Hill opened a little later this year than in 2013.

A bit of New Year’s snow might make for the best skiing at Chapman Hill so far this season. But skiers will have to wait until Friday to enjoy the powder, because the area will be closed for New Year’s Day.

New Year’s Eve snow was forecasted to start falling around 9 p.m. and may continue to fall through Thursday. A total of 4 to 8 inches is expected in town, according to the National Weather Service.

“We’re always appreciative of any natural snow on the hill,” said David Jaworski, the ski hill’s acting general manager.

Chapman Hill opened later in the season compared with last year because warm weather slowed the snowmaking efforts. But the “Little Tow Rope” opened Christmas Eve.

Both tow ropes were open Wednesday, and many kids were enjoying a winter break on the hill, Jaworski said.

The “Big Tow” was down for repairs earlier this week.

The hill will open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Call Chapman Hill at 375-7395 for more information.
