Steampunk Snowdown rapidly is approaching

Snowdown, an eccentric brouhaha originally intended to alleviate cabin fever halfway through winter, will celebrate its 37th continuous year.

The five-day festival will take place Jan. 28 through Feb. 1.

This year’s theme, Steampunk Snowdown, will bring out an array of bizarre costumes and props that convey futuristic visions as imagined from the Victorian era, according to a Snowdown news release.

The annual light parade is said to attract more than 10,000 spectators to the streets of downtown Durango. The light parade features theme-oriented light floats, performance art and costumes.

More than 100 activities are scheduled to take place, many with more adult humor in mind, but there are plenty of activities for children and families.

Snowdown was voted one of Outside Magazine’s top five winter carnivals in North America.
