One injury in Highway 160 accident

A two-vehicle accident Friday morning on U.S. Highway 160 north of Three Springs Boulevard sent one person to the hospital.

Traffic was reduced to one lane for a time after the collision, which occurred about 8 a.m.

“One vehicle rear-ended the other,” said Capt. Adrian Driscoll, with the Colorado State Patrol in Durango.

An eastbound 2005 Toyota van driven by Michael Bollinger had stopped for a school bus, Driscoll said. A 1992 Oldsmobile Bravada driven by Emily Balchunas ran into the Toyota from behind.

Balchunas, who was not wearing a seat belt, was cited for careless driving, Driscoll said.

Bollinger was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center as a precaution, Driscoll said.

Bollinger was treated and released, hospital spokesman David Bruzzese said.

Traffic returned to normal through the area before 9 a.m.
