Chandler, Wiegert carry DHS girls past Aztec

The backcourt of Katrina Chandler and Katie Wiegert scored 85 percent of the Durango High School girls basketball team’s points in an overtime win Tuesday in Aztec.

Wiegert made five 3-pointers en route to 21 points, Chandler added 13, and DHS beat Aztec 40-36 in overtime.

The Demons trailed 17-10 at the end of the first half and only hit 2-of-17 shots before halftime. They started to make shots in the second half to close the gap and force overtime.

“We were able to get better looks,” DHS head coach Tim Fitzpatrick said. “We picked up the full-court pressure, and that got us going.”

Chandler and Wiegert made their mark in the extra frame, as well.

Wiegert scored five points in overtime, and Chandler made three of four free throws for Durango’s best start since 2008.

“They’re a pretty good backcourt, both of them,” Fitzpatrick said. “They do carry most of our scoring. They’re the only ones who scored in overtime.”

DHS (9-1) hasn’t won nine of its first 10 games in six years. The Demons will have a chance to better the 2008 team’s opening run when they play Piedra Vista at 7 p.m. Tuesday at DHS.

“We had some energy that we really haven’t had all week (in practice),” Fitzpatrick said. “It’s a good time to keep improving.”
