If you don’t have a home phone, local authorities can’t tell you about a wildfire encroaching on your home unless you tell them how to contact you.
The Durango-La Plata Emergency Communications Center is now using CodeRED to send alerts about major emergencies to residents.
The new service allows users to select how they would like to be contacted – phone, text messages or email, said Wayne Walsh, a spokesman for the city.
It also asks for a home or work address, so it can localize alerts to your area, he said.
“You just never know when something is going to happen,” he said.
Residents can enroll and edit their contact information at anytime.
People who have land lines will be contacted during an emergency via reverse 911.

The Durango Herald also provides alerts by text message about major breaking news, including breaking weather and traffic information.
Send a text message from your cellphone to 99000 and type dhnews in the message.
