Dick White to seek City Council re-election

Informal announcement made on social media

A whole lot of unfinished business has led Durango City Councilor Dick White to unofficially announce he will seek re-election to the City Council in the municipal election April 7.

“I think experience will help with what we’ve got on our plate for the next several years,” White said in a telephone interview with The Durango Herald on Wednesday night.

White made the informal announcement of his candidacy on LinkedIn, a professional networking website. He described the unofficial announcement on the website as “a good way to get the word out to quite a lot of people.”

White, a former astronomy professor at Smith College in Massachusetts, first was elected to City Council in 2011. He has been a Durango resident since 2003.

Among the big projects White mentioned he would like to help complete:

Finding a funding mechanism to expand the Durango-La Plata County Airport.

Obtaining a half-cent sales-tax extension for recreation and trail projects. The tax is set to expire in three to four years, depending on the payoff of bonds.

Solving funding issues for state-required upgrades in the city’s wastewater-treatment plant.

Working on a sustainability and climate-protection agenda for the city.

White said he expects to make an official announcement of his candidacy in the next two weeks, probably after all the hubbub of Snowdown expires.

The unofficial announcement comes two days after Mayor Sweetie Marbury announced she also will run for re-election to the Durango City Council.

The top two vote-getters in the April 7 election will fill two open seats. So far, Marbury and White are the only people to express an interest in running.
