Ski-area visitor count back on track

Purgatory got off to slow start
Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort said warm temperatures and a lack of snow meant a slow start, but skier numbers are back on target.

Uncooperative weather handed Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort a bit of a rocky start to its ski season, but the visitor count is back on track, spokeswoman Kim Oyler said Wednesday.

The DMR trend reflects the experience of its 21 members, a Colorado Ski Country USA release said Wednesday.

Total skier visits during the Oct. 17 through Dec. 31 period are about 1 percent off the blistering pace of the previous season, the release said. But they exceeded the first-period five-year average by nearly 4 percent.

Ski areas don’t release numbers of skiers, but couch trends in percentages.

Oyler didn’t have any percentage comparisons available.

Durango Mountain Resort got off to a slow start because of weak natural snowfall and warm temperatures in late November and early December, Oyler said.

“But the fantastic Christmas and New Year’s holiday period produced several record (visitor) days and allowed us to catch up and enter mid-season back on plan,” Oyler said. “We have great conditions for our guests and season-pass holders.”
