South Camino del Rio accidents slow traffic

Two separate accidents on South Camino del Rio on Friday evening were relatively minor, but they managed to tie up northbound traffic.

The first crash, where one vehicle rear-ended another, caused some initial disruption immediately north of the intersection at 200 South Camino del Rio.

“They pulled off the road, though,” said Sgt. Rita Warfield of the Durango Police Department.

The second accident occurred in the intersection at 200 South Camino del Rio. (The intersection is south of Santa Rita Park.)

“The accident happened at about 5:30 p.m., and traffic was backed up for about half an hour,” Warfield said. “At one point, traffic was backed up all the way past the light to the Durango Mall. It’s a time when everyone is trying to come into town on a Friday night or trying to get home.”

The first accident played a role in the second.

“Christian Blackshear, 58, was driving a white Volkswagen Jetta northbound when he noticed there had been an accident just up the road and saw ambulances and other vehicles,” Warfield said. “He noticed other cars were slowing or stopping, so he stopped.”

Gabriel Fry, 19, was driving a red Toyota 4Runner, behind Blackshear and ran into the back of Blackshear’s car, she said.

Both cars were towed, but no one in either accident was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center, Warfield said.

Fry was cited for careless driving.
