2014 letter-writers

In 2014, The Durango Herald letters to the editor section was a lively forum, full of spirited debate about community concerns. Readers shared with others their views on the “Arc of History” – or the “rock banana,” depending on perspective – candidates for election, skiers requiring rescue in the backcountry, climate change, the Hermosa Creek Watershed Protection Act, gun control, legal marijuana, city land-use rules, CDOT’s various projects, President Obama, Middle East politics and conflict, school testing and budgets, the Durango Farmers Market’s vendor policies, Durango Natural Foods’ leadership, the Affordable Care Act, same-sex marriage and parking at the airport – to name just a few of the resonating topics letter-writers covered in 2014. There was some poetry, but mostly prose. Visitors, residents, high school students, voters, teachers, law enforcement officers, farmers, business owners current and former local, state and federal elected officials contributed to the conversation.

Herald readers are key participants in the dialogue that shapes our community. In all, 954 people had at least one letter published in 2014; many of these writers had multiple letters printed. These letters inform, provoke, affirm; they add dimension to a dynamic and meandering conversation. The Herald editorial board appreciates our readers’ and letter-writers’ commitment to an engaged discussion about topics of the day. Your comments, kudos, ideas, criticisms and unique perspectives contribute to lively conversation that deeply influences life in Durango and far beyond. Thanks to all who read and wrote to the Herald in 2014.
