McMenimen, BHS wrestlers notch top-10 finish in tourney

Revenge motivated Bayfield High School senior wrestler Colter McMenimen on Saturday in the finals of the Sand Devil tournament in Page, Arizona.

He was facing Guy Wallace of Dolores at 145 pounds, who beat him last year in the same tournament’s semifinals, McMenimen’s only loss before state.

McMenimen won convincingly, 10-1, to claim the championship.

“He was looking a little bit for redemption,” BHS head coach Todd McMenimen said. “It was a fairly dominant performance, which was good.”

Three other Wolverines placed at the tournament to put BHS in 10th out of 24 teams.

“With the number of kids we’ve got, that’s a real respectable finish,” coach McMenimen said.

Arizona’s Camp Verde High School won the tournament for the third year in a row.

“They’re always a tough, solid program down here in Northern Arizona,” coach McMenimen said. “Anytime you’re on the mat with them, you’re improving the caliber of your wrestling.”

Garret Beebe took third at 106 pounds.

“He could have been in the finals,” coach McMenimen said. “His match that he lost to drop him down, that next time around, I think we win that match.”

Jake Sandrey and Cash Snooks finished fourth at 113 pounds and 152 pounds, respectively.

Once BHS returns from Arizona, the Wolverines will have a busy week. They visit Pagosa Springs on Thursday before a tri-meet with Ignacio and Rangely on Friday in Ignacio and Ignacio’s Butch Melton Invitational on Saturday.
