Sonntag, Finkel win signature ski races

Racers in the girls 5-kilometer event head uphill Saturday during the Langlauf at the Durango Nordic Center.

Ben Sonntag and Diana Finkel won the signature races Saturday during the annual Langlauf cross-country ski race at the Durango Nordic Center.

The “long race,” is it’s translated literally from German, was 30 kilometers. The men’s race went to Sonntag, a professional cyclist and German native who now lives in Durango. He finished in 1 hour, 20 minutes, 52 seconds – 3:40 in front of second-place Seth Downs.

Finkel won the women’s race in 1:30:04, 1:52 ahead of Durango Nordic Ski Club coach Paige Elliott. Molly Hummel was third in 1:32:30.

The race brought 73 competitors of all ages from Colorado and New Mexico to the Nordic Center for the local event. It was the race debut for the center’s new building, which houses both the center and administrative offices for the Purgatory Metro District. Racers and spectators alike enjoyed the building and the deck, said Durango Nordic Ski Team coach Gary Colliander, who had several team members compete.

The 15K winners were Steve Ilg in 47:02 and Maggie Wigton in 55:20.

Ten-kilometer champs were Charlie Greenburg in 29:07 and Anna Fake in 35:41.

In the 5K, Katja Freeburn took the girls race in 15:00 and Logan Moore the boys event in 15:05.

And in the 3.5K events, Halle Moore won the girls in 12:21 and Levi Tichi won the boys in 12:39.

The Nordic team’s next competition is this weekend at Soldier Hollow, Utah, the site of cross country skiing and biathlon at the 2002 Olympics.
