Tipton to visit Durango Thursday

U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, R-Cortez, will visit Durango and Cortez on Thursday.

U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton will visit La Plata County commissioners on Thursday before traveling to Cortez later in the day for a visit to Southwest Open High School.

Tipton, R-Cortez, will meet with the Board of County Commissioners from 8 to 9:15 a.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio. He will preview the 114th Congress, discuss planned legislation and talk with commissioners about the county’s top priorities.

He’ll then travel to Cortez for a 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. visit to Southwest Open, a charter high school at 401 N. Dolores, in support of National School Choice Week.

In a news release Tuesday, Tipton said he is a strong supporter of school choice, and he believes parents should have options when it comes to the education and development of their children.

While at the school, he will meet with students and faculty to learn more about their curriculum and standards, as well as answer questions from students.

Tipton was first elected to Congress in 2010 and was re-elected in 2012 and 2014.
