District 9-R adopts academic calendar for 2015-2016

The 2015-2016 academic calendar for Durango School District 9-R is not too different from the current schedule.

The schedule was adopted 5-2 on Tuesday by school board members. Andy Burns and Brie Stahnke dissented.

The first day of class will be Aug. 25, and the last day will be June 2, 2016.

Students will have 175 face-to-face days with teachers, the same as this year. Mondays will be early-release day that will allow teachers to compare notes and plan.

The board members took the pulse of community members on various issues via surveys in December and again this month.

Among their questions: How many days should teachers work? How many student-contact days should there be? When should holiday breaks and spring break fall? And what should first-day and last-day dates be?

Burns and Stahnke said they would have liked two to five more days of teacher-student contact. The state requires a minimum of 163 days in class, while 9-R schedules 175.

Stahnke also called for more innovative ways to increase teacher planning time across the board. Teachers get at least 110 minutes a day for planning their lessons.

In addition to the two surveys, board members dedicated their Jan. 20 study session to reviewing public comments.

Under the 2015-2016 calendar, Thanksgiving break will be Nov. 23-27, the winter break will be from Dec. 21 through Jan. 1 and spring break from March 28 through April 1.
