Hot chocolate + parade = bliss

Alternative Horizons raising funds during Snowdown

Newly minted as Nonprofit of the Year, Alternative Horizons will be raising money to provide its services by selling hot chocolate downtown Friday night before, during and after the Snowdown Light Parade.

Alternative Horizons supports victims and survivors of domestic violence and works to eradicate it.

“A $3 suggested donation gets a cup of hot chocolate with a candy cane and marshmallows,” said AH Board President Rita Warfield, a sergeant with the Durango Police Department. “All proceeds go toward the services Alternative Horizons provides to our community.”

January has been so balmy, it appeared the parade might be one of the warmest ever, so people wouldn’t need hot chocolate to stay comfortable.

The Grand Junction office of the National Weather Service, however, is predicting a 90 percent chance of rain and snow all day and night Friday, with a high of 41 degrees and a low of 27 degrees, so the hot chocolate fundraiser is looking prescient at this time. Parade fans will need to dress to stay dry and warm, and a cup or two of hot chocolate will certainly help.

The beverage will be served from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Durango Welcome Center, 802 Main Ave.
