Cover story, major exhibit

The book Tough Men in Hard Places by Durango author Esther Greenfield and Jay Harrison, executive director at the Center of Southwest Studies, is featured on the cover of February’s Colorado Country Life. The book features photographs from the collection at Center of Southwest Studies.

After sorting through 8,000 photos and researching the trials and tribulations of the men who brought electricity to remote areas on the Western Slope, author Esther Greenfield and Jay Harrison, executive director at Center of Southwest Studies, are seeing the resulting book get a big play.

Tough Men in Hard Places: A Photographic Collection is featured on the cover of the February edition of Colorado Country Life, a publication of the Colorado Rural Electric Association, which La Plata Electric Association provides to its customers. The magazine will start arriving in mailboxes early next week.

Greenfield has been volunteering at the center since 2007.

“The other volunteers and I say we should pay them for letting us work here,” she said about the task.

The center will hold a special exhibit in conjunction with the book, with the opening reception taking place from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 12.
