New fat tire race in town

10-hour event comes to Snowscape
Jeff Estes rides down a short, steep section of one of the new fat bike trails this month at the Durango Nordic Center. Silverton will host a fat tire bicycle race Feb. 7.

Silverton will host its first ever Silverton White Out fat tire bicycle race Feb. 7.

The event is part of Snowscape, Silverton’s equivalent to Snowdown.

The Silverton Chamber of Commerce said 100 or more riders may come for the event, which is being organized by Russell Zimmerman, owner of Durango Cyclery, and Durango DEVO’s Sarah Tescher.

The 10-hour race will be run around an eight-mile loop from downtown Silverton, traversing the Shrine Road and trails to Arrastra Gulch and back.

Cyclists can compete solo or in teams of two or four.

“The course is designed such that you experience the combination of alley riding, pass by the historical Blair Street, a bit of singletrack, a moment of feeling way out there and some amazing views,” Tescher said.

The course will be adjusted if snow conditions warrant.

“We want everyone to have fun,” Tescher said.

Event headquarters will be at the Grand Imperial Hotel on Greene Street. For registration and more information, visit www.silvertonwhiteout.com.
