Montrose mauls Demons

DHS girls struggle to score

The first big road challenge in the league was only made larger by the absence of the Demons’ leading scorer.

Without senior guard Katie Wiegert, the Durango High School girls basketball team visited the sixth-ranked Montrose Indians for a big Class 4A clash in the 4A/5A Southwestern League.

The Demons struggled to score without Wiegert, though head coach Tim Fitzpatrick was pleased with his team’s all-around effort. Still, it wasn’t enough as the Demons fell 42-25.

“We knew it would be a tough one coming in. Montrose is a very good team,” Fitzpatrick said. “I’m proud of the kids. They played hard.”

Wiegert missed her first game since suffering a concussion in Tuesday night’s home win against Montezuma-Cortez. Friday night, the Demons (12-3, 1-2 SWL) were led by Shilo Gillen’s seven points.

DHS was down 23-16 at halftime, and that hole only grew larger in the second half. Katrina Chandler and Taylor Edwards each scored five points for DHS.

Fitzpatrick was pleased with how Danica Dudley played defensively against 6-foot-5 junior center Elle Pace of Montrose (12-3, 3-1 SWL).

“She did an outstanding job. Our defense was pretty good most of the game, and Emily Fogel did a great job on Holly Brooks, Montrose’s really good guard,” Fitzpatrick said.

DHS will stay on the road overnight to play a noon game Saturday at Fruita Monument (10-7, 0-2 SWL).

“Fruita is another good basketball team. We have to forget this one and come back out and play hard,” Fitzpatrick said.
