The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week award might as well take on Alex Herrera’s name. He’s certainly won it enough.

Herrera, a 6-foot-9 senior center from Ignacio, earned the accolade again Monday after his performances for Fort Lewis College in games at New Mexico Highlands and Western New Mexico over the weekend.

It was Herrera’s eighth defensive or offensive player of the week award this season and 17th total in his career. He has swept both awards three times, including twice this season. It was Herrera’s fifth RMAC Defensive Player of the Week award this season.

Herrera, who is second in all of Division II men’s basketball with 16 double-doubles, averaged a double-double over the weekend with 21.5 points and 14.5 rebounds to go with 3.5 blocked shots per game.

Against Western N.M. on Friday, Herrera had 24 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks while shooting 12-of-16 from the floor. The next night, Herrera played all 40 minutes against N.M. Highlands and scored 19 points and pulled in 13 rebounds. He also had four blocks, two assists and a steal.

This season, Herrera has averaged 23.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. He leads Division II in total blocks with 81 and free-throw attempts with 244.

Herrera also was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division II National Player of the Week on the weeken ending Jan. 25.

FLC has six games remaining in the regular season and four home games, beginning with CSU-Pueblo at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Whalen Gymnasium.
