World Championships

Two-time Olympic champion Ted Ligety just had that everything-goes-right kind of performance two years ago in Austria, when he became the first male skier since 1968 to win at least three golds at worlds. Still, Ligety’s not ready to surrender those crowns, any of them.

BEAVER CREEK – A glance at the men’s super-G race at worlds on Wednesday:

2013 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS SUPER-G MEDALISTS

Gold, Ted Ligety, United States. Silver, Gauthier de Tessieres, France. Bronze, Aksel Lund Svindal, Norway.

THE FAVORITES

Kjetil Jansrud of Norway: Leads the standings on the World Cup circuit and has two wins this season. Captured gold in this discipline at Sochi Games.

Hannes Reichelt of Austria: The course seems to suit the 34-year-old as he won the super-G race at Beaver Creek in December.

Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway: Sure, he had surgery to fix a torn Achilles in October and hasn’t trained all that much, but whenever he’s in a race he can win.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT

Ted Ligety, United States: He is the defending world champion in this discipline, one of the three golds he captured two years ago in Austria. Best finish in a World Cup super-G race this season is 11th.

Bode Miller, United States: Had a herniated disk repaired in November, but plans on racing. Has four wins at Beaver Creek, none in the super-G.

QUOTABLE

“Even though I kind of accept myself being a favorite on paper, it’s not changing the way I look at every race. I don’t feel like a favorite when I’m at the start.” Kjetil Jansrud of Norway.

FACTS & FIGURES

Christof Innerhofer of Italy captured the super-G world title at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, in 2011. Should Italy win, the country would match Austria, Norway, Switzerland and the U.S. for most world titles in the super-G. ... This will be Miller’s first race of the season. He won the super-G world crown in 2005. ... Jansrud has three “DNFs” – did not finish – in three super-G starts at world championships. ... A win would move Ligety into a third-place tie with five others with four world titles. Only Austria’s Toni Sailer (7) and France’s Jean-Claude Killy (6) have more.
