Chapman Hill Bike Park ramps up

Durango rec center will host a public meeting Wednesday
Long-term plans for the Chapman Hill Bike Park might include some big and small jumps. It will include commuter trails and flow trails, according to the first phase of the proposed plan.

A public meeting to discuss the proposed Chapman Hill Bike Park is set for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

Representatives from Alpine Bike Parks will present preliminary findings and discuss alternatives for the bike park. Alpine, a renowned design team with offices in Boulder and Whistler, British Columbia, was hired by the city of Durango to evaluate the feasibility of developing a bike park at Chapman Hill.

The Durango Parks and Recreation Advisory Board in September unanimously voted to fund the first planning phase of a potential Chapman Hill Bike Park. The board appropriated $30,000 for the plan from its $100,000 budget, which will go directly to Alpine Bike Parks. The company will do the design work for the first three trails of the planned park.

The first phase of the plan includes two flow trails and one commuter trail. They would be located between Florida Road and Rim Drive.

Flow trails allow the rider to coast downhill and normally are built on a 12 percent grade. The commuter trail would fit into the city’s master multimodal plan.

The bike park is a partnership among Trails 2000, the city of Durango, Durango BMX, Durango DEVO, the Durango Winter Sports Foundation, Fort Lewis College cycling and Second Avenue Sports. It’s been in the planning for several years.
