No titles, but BHS sends 4 wrestlers to state

No Wolverines won regional championships, but four Bayfield High School wrestlers are headed to state.

Ryan Nava and Colter McMenimen finished second, and Jake Sandrey and Sam Westbrook took third to book a spot in the Class 3A field.

“When you get to the finals, they’re gonna be tough matches,” BHS head coach Todd McMenimen said.

Nava was pinned with 14 seconds remaining in the third period at 126 pounds by Issik Herod of Moffat County. He was in control late but made a mistake that cost him the regional title.

Colter McMenimen matched up with Olathe’s Austin Shank and lost a 7-1 decision in the 145-pound final.

“They’re sitting third- and fourth-ranked in the state,” coach McMenimen said. “Got to give it to Shank. He’s a tough kid who doesn’t give up. He maintained solid position all the way through.”

Sandrey beat Pagosa Springs’ Tate Hinger 5-1 in the third-place match at 113 pounds, and Westbrook gutted out a 3-1 decision over Sterling’s Fabian Soto at heavyweight.

BHS freshman Garrett Beebe placed sixth at 106 pounds after Montezuma-Cortez’s Colton Reynolds pinned him with 1 minute, 1 second left in the third period.

“Not our top game in the sixth-place match, but it was good to come out with a placing there,” coach McMenimen said.

Nine BHS wrestlers still were alive at the start of the day, but one round in particular hurt the Wolverines’ chances to send more.

“We lost a bunch of heartbreakers in that consolation quarterfinal round,” coach McMenimen said. ”We were in control of three matches, very well in control, and got caught with a headlock and pinned in one and too high and sucked under and pinned in the other two. Tough ones to take for the kids.”

Cody Speece fell via the headlock at 120 pounds, while Blaine Barnes at 220 pounds and Taylor Winch at 132 “got too high and were sucked under,” coach McMenimen said.

The lack of regional champions didn’t bother coach McMenimen. He’s glad to be bringing the kids they will next week.

“It’s disappointing more for them than it is from my point of view. You get to the state tournament, you’ve got to wrestle tough,” coach McMenimen said. “It might light a fire and give them a push for the next week. We’ll go into the week and get a hard week of work in.”
