Small things add up to Montana Western

Clark signs to play college volleyball

A few little things made everything feel right about Montana for Logan Clark.

She took a visit in the summer, as she considered signing to play volleyball at the University of Montana Western in Dillon, Montana. She quickly clicked with the head coach, Lisa Griffiths, and she already knew the university offered the exact field of study she desires to pursue. It was on the way out of town that the small things made her confident she wanted to become a Bulldog.

“We all instantly loved the school, the community, the coach, everything. It all lined up,” said Logan’s mother, Letty Clark. “There were even little signs – Logan Lake as we were leaving town, or Clark Street in town. She knew.”

Clark, a homeschool student who played three years of varsity volleyball for Durango High School, committed to Montana Western and made it official by signing a National Letter of Intent with the school on Feb. 11. Now she’s eager to join the Bulldogs and play in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

“Since last year, I’ve really wanted to play at a collegiate level,” Clark said. “I came across Montana Western and really looked into it. They had my major, and I got into it, then I saw they had volleyball, and I got stoked. I started talking to the coach, and it worked out from there.”

Clark got the chance to meet the coach and the team during a visit last summer. Griffiths was happy to see Clark sign.

“Logan is a great setter and adds solid depth for us at the position. She is a composed player and has a competitive nature and leadership style I am looking for,” Griffiths said in a news release. “She is a great fit for UMW both academically and athletically, and I am excited to add her to the Bulldog family.”

Clark, a 5-foot-6 setter, was a First Team All-Southwestern League performer in her senior season, in which she had 572 assists. She also was selected to the Colorado High School Coaches Association Class 4A All-State team and will play in the senior-only all-star game this summer.

She added 149 digs and had a .671 hitting percentage to go along with her assist total.

Clark is the second daughter of Letty and Randy Clark to go on to play college volleyball. Logan’s older sister Kennedy is a sophomore at Fort Lewis College, where she also plays volleyball.

“It was easy for us to get into this mode with Logan because her older sister did the same thing,” Randy Clark said. “Logan decided she wanted to play in college and did all the work herself to get there. She knew what to do.”

Clark plans to study art with an emphasis in equine studies.

Now, she’s looking forward to spending time getting ready to hit the volleyball court with the Bulldogs.

“I definitely want to get in shape better. I want to show up ready to play,” she said. “There are going to be five setters, and that’s my position. I’m really going to work hard at taking that spot.”
