IHS hoops teams earn big wins against Norwood

IHS girls first to beat the Mavericks

The Norwood Mavericks were no match for the Ignacio Bobcats on Friday.

The Bobcats improved to 16-2 and 10-0 in the San Juan League with a 59-24 home win against Norwood at the SunUte Community Center.

Ignacio was up 24-3 in the first quarter and went into halftime ahead 34-8.

“We played the young guys a ton, even in the first quarter,” IHS head coach Chris Valdez said. “We jumped on them pretty good.”

Adison Jones had 12 points, 11 rebounds, six steals, four blocked shots and four assists for IHS. Wyatt Hayes also had a double-double with 10 points, 10 steals, four assists and four blocked shots. He had seven steals in the first half alone.

Tucker Ward also had 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals, and Nicholas Herrera added 10 points and six rebounds.

Norwood had beaten Telluride by 17 points a week ago, and Ignacio will close out its regular season at Telluride on Saturday.

The Ignacio girls team (13-5, 9-2 SJL) also pulled off a big win against the Mavericks, winning 38-36. The Mavericks entered the game 16-0 overall and 9-0 in league play.

Both teams will finish the regular season at Telluride on Saturday.
