IHS boys again wear the SJL crown

No San Juan League team has been able to take down the Ignacio High School boys basketball team in league play the last two years.

IHS finished out its second consecutive undefeated league season with a 66-44 win at Telluride on Saturday.

IHS has now won nine of the last 10 regular-season league championships. They had to forfeit one of those years because their junior varsity team played in a varsity game, which is against the rules.

“We got the last win out of the way, 17-2 league champions, undefeated,” IHS head coach Chris Valdez said. “We have districts next week, and we look forward to that.”

IHS will go for its eight consecutive district title when the tournament begins next weekend in Cortez.

The Miners were the last SJL team to beat IHS (17-2, 11-0 SJL) – on Feb. 16, 2013.

It wouldn’t happen again Saturday, though, as IHS built a 60-29 lead after the third quarter before mailing it in during the fourth.

Adison Jones led IHS with 18 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Wyatt Hayes scored 15 points on five made 3s, and he added five rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Tucker Ward scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had four assists and three steals for the Bobcats. Anthony Manzanares also had 11 points to go with five assists.

Nicholas Herrera battled foul trouble but still finished with nine points, seven rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals.
