Trash on Highway 550 is disgusting

This is my second letter to editor about the trash problem that exists on the southern corridor of U.S. Highway 550. Needless to say, nothing has changed, and perhaps it has actually gotten worse.

I live and travel on 550 daily. Many times, I witness garbage trucks traveling south on the highway, spewing trash all the way down the road. When we can, we take the number of the truck and call the company or CDOT. They listen and act concerned, but nothing changes. These trucks are in disarray and should be forced by someone to maintain the roofs of their haulers. The fabric covers are less than sufficient to contain the tons of trash under them. It is beyond my comprehension why the county and CDOT don’t hold these companies accountable for this. We, as friends of Highway 550, have spent many days coordinating cleanups, only to see trash spewed within hours or days of this effort. I love living south of town. The sunsets are amazing. The view of the La Platas breath-taking. Trash in the bar ditches: disgusting.

Can anyone hear us? Does anyone care what our southern entrance to Durango conveys? We should all be disgusted. Who will hold these companies responsible?
