Free tax prep help available

Free tax preparation is being offered Saturday at Southwest Colorado Community College. It will be offered again March 6 in Mancos and March 7 in Durango.

Time is running out for people looking for free help filing their income tax return through a Southwest Colorado Community College program.

People with income of $53,000 or less are eligible.

IRS-certified tax preparers will be at the Durango campus, 701 Camino del Rio, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and March 7, and at the Mancos campus, 33057 U.S. Highway 160, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on March 6.

The program uses student volunteers from Fort Lewis College who are IRS-certified as tax preparers.

The list of documents required to file an income tax return is available at www.irs.gov. Look for VITA once on the site.

Information is available from Kathy Elliot at (970) 749-2838 or at Kathy.taxhelp@yahoo.com.

The Tax Help Colorado program is sponsored by the private Piton Foundation in Denver.
