View from the Fort No break from musical talent

Although spring – and spring break – are just around the corner, we are busy bringing many opportunities for you to experience awesome talent at the Fort during March.

The Concert Hall has an impressive lineup beginning March 8 with “Classgrass” (classical bluegrass or bluegrass with class), the hot duo of Mike Marshall, virtuoso on mandolin, guitar and fiddle, and Edgar Meyer, a Grammy Award-winning genius whose stand-up bass swings from bluegrass to classical to jazz with remarkable ease. Together, they take audiences on an enthralling musical ride.

Up next on March 14 is the Canadian folk trio The Wailin’ Jennys, which began as a one-time-only grouping. Musical chemistry and audience response quickly turned them into an ongoing band. The organic, professional honesty of the Jennys’ craftsmanship comes through with every strum and pick.

Cellist Katherine Jetter will perform solo and collaborative works ranging from contemporary American to classical Beethoven with Lisa Campi on March 15 at 3 p.m. in Roshong Recital Hall.

Legendary songwriter and former lead singer of the multi-platinum rock band Live, Ed Kowalczyk comes to the Concert Hall on March 22 with a new, unplugged production of rock’s most profound anthems. Kowalczyk has some of alternative rock’s most iconic hits including “Lightning Crashes,” “I Alone” and “Selling the Drama.” With the Unplugged tour, he will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the seminal Live album “Throwing Copper,” along with a few surprises.

A rare opportunity to see two living legends together on one stage is yours on March 24. The Blues Hall of Fame presents two of the world’s most important acoustic blues musicians, Charlie Musselwhite and John Hammond. Since its inception in 1980, The Blues Foundation has inducted members for their historical contributions, impact and overall influence on the blues.

A celebration of the songwriters, Nashville Chicks with Hits features three of Nashville’s top female songwriters. The ladies will take the stage March 28 with their guitars to perform their hits and tell the stories behind the songs, including Blake Shelton’s “Good at Startin’ Fires,” Leann Rimes’ “Nothin’ Bout Love Makes Sense” and Rascal Flatts’ Grammy-nominated “Every Day.”

Called “a riveting, always-surprising and delightful trio” by the Austin American-Statesman, line upon line percussion will present a recital and master class March 30-31. Hosted by the FLC Music Department, the trio is committed to seeking new ways for percussion instruments to advance contemporary music and has commissioned and premiered a dozen new percussion works.

Two openings are scheduled for April 3 – the Art Department’s 54th Annual Student Juried Exhibition with a reception at 4:30 p.m., and the Mel Brooks musical “The Producers,” presented by Theatre and Music faculty and students.

Tickets for Concert Hall, Theatre Department and Music Department performances can be purchased at the Durango Welcome Center, 802 Main Ave., at www.durangoconcerts.com or by calling 247-7657.
