DHS students advance in business contest

Four Durango High School students have qualified for an international business career development conference to be held April 24-29 in Orlando, Florida.

Abby Scott, Jenna Engelken, Mason Stetler and Jared Webster will be going to the conference sponsored by DECA, which stands for Delta Epsilon Chi and Distributive Education Clubs of America. The organization prepares high school and college students for careers in business, finance and entrepreneurial endeavors.

Additionally, Joaquin Valdez and Charles McClung qualified for the conference for their performance in a nationwide online stock market competition.

The six students qualified for the Orlando trip at the DECA State Leadership Conference competition held in Colorado Springs on Feb. 21-24.

Also recognized at the February event were Violet Witchel and Paxton Scott for performances at the DECA regional competition held Dec. 8 in Glenwood Springs.

Two Durangoans were recognized as 2015 Friends of DECA: Julie Popp, Durango School District 9-R spokeswoman, for raising awareness of DECA in the community; and Kyle Hartley, manager of Duranglers, for his work with the DHS sports and entertainment marketing class in 2014.

Popp and Hartley will receive awards in separate ceremonies in the spring.

In excess of 2,700 Colorado high school students took part in the Colorado Springs competition, which covered more than 40 events. Some 17,000 students will compete at the international event in Orlando.

DECA has 200,000 members in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Germany.
