Officials must scrutinize airport options

Regarding my statements at the city’s Feb. 23 public hearing on the future of the Durango-La Plata County Airport, the Herald wrote that I questioned the need for a new facility (Feb. 24).

To the contrary, at the opening of my remarks, I stated my view that expansion or a new facility is needed. I have asked many questions about the expansion alternative selected by the airport commissioners to build on the east side of the airport property.

I am respectfully asking our city and county elected officials to closely scrutinize that alternative among others, including its associated property-tax referendum that would go to the voters as early as this November.
