Speaker did not brainwash AHS students

At Animas High School, we engage with new perspectives. Through projects and research, discussions and deeper analysis, we develop well-rounded opinions. AHS teachers emphasize diverse perspectives by providing us with multiple sources, so we can clearly understand conflicting ideologies.

We build upon the resources we are offered and form well-crafted opinions in response. The mission of Animas High School is to “prepare all students for college and post-secondary success by creating critical thinkers and engaged citizens.”

Daniel Suelo’s visit exposed us to a fresh perspective, giving us beautiful fodder for intelligent conversations about the nature of our society. By no means did it brainwash us into following his path.

To those who criticized Suelo’s visit to our school: Don’t assume AHS students are that impressionable. Many comments expressed disdain that Suelo presented, as if he were expressing the views of our institution. Some comments mentioned a disastrous future if this is the role model we are given. Are we machines built to absorb and embody every ideology? Do you think that one guest speaker will impact us to quit money and live in a cave?

Whatever you may think about a lifestyle without money, Suelo’s presentation was not to convince us the legitimacy of his choice.

His presentation was a critical reflection of our society through the lens of his money-free lifestyle. Daniel spoke about human authenticity, rather than the evils of the dollar. This alternate outlook helps us realize how much we appreciate our lifestyles and how we can become more authentic people.

Throughout the day, students discussed the presentation and disagreed with his choice to “quit money,” challenging each other to be critical thinkers. We encourage the detractors of this event to do the same.

While we appreciate consistent reporting on AHS events, we value accurate coverage, which was not represented in the Herald (Feb. 12). Suelo’s worldview was misquoted, and the story inaccurately described what he brought to the students.

We thank you for your support and ask for increased diligence when reporting Durango’s news.
