Cedar Networks targeted by online attack

Cedar Networks was targeted Tuesday for a denial of service attack that brought down Internet service for local customers.

Co-owner Vijay Bastawade said it was the first time in 10 years of service that Cedar Networks had been targeted by such an attack. The company is a Durango-based Internet service provider.

“It was very specific that they were attacking our network,” he said.

In denial of service incidents, hackers seek to overload a provider’s Internet servers.

Customer data was not affected, Bastawade said. The wave of attacks disrupted Internet service in spotty interruptions lasting up to 40 minutes; he did not know how many customers were affected.

At times, the attack generated 2.5 to 3.0 gigabits of traffic. The attack seemed to originate in China, Bastawade said.

“Most of it was coming from China, but that can be spoofed, meaning it can be faked,” he said.

In addition to individual customers, some businesses were affected.

At Grassburger, the outage knocked out the point-of-sale system for about 15 minutes, and the online ordering system for about an hour.

Manager Mark Hirschberg said it was a “little hiccup,” and customers were understanding.

“It got taken care of,” he said.
