Durango High briefly evacuated

It’s unclear why alarm went off

Durango High School was evacuated at 2:35 p.m. Wednesday after a fire alarm was triggered.

“There was a smoke alarm that went off in the kitchen,” said Julie Popp, Durango School District 9-R spokeswoman.

She said the fire department had given DHS the all-clear at 2:57 p.m.

“Students are returning to classes for the end of the day,” she said.

As of 3 p.m., Popp still didn’t know what had caused the fire alarm to go off.

In all, students were out of class for between 25 and 30 minutes.

“They’ll be in class for the last 20 minutes of the day,” Popp said.

She said, “this is why we drill. It’s really important when and if an alarm goes off that everybody knows their role. It’s part of why the evacuation went really smoothly.”
