Four candidates fight for two City Council seats

The ballot order is set for our April 7 election

Four candidates are in the race for two Durango City Council seats.

The deadline for entering the race passed Tuesday, and the ballot order was chosen Wednesday morning.

First on the list will be Sean Waddell, who is a newcomer to the local political scene and a property manager.

Dick White will be second. He is an incumbent and a former astronomy professor at Smith College in Massachusetts. He has been a Durango resident since 2003.

Dave McHenry will appear third. He also is a first-time candidate and a part-time landscape architect for DHM design.

Current Mayor Sweetie Marbury, a retired teacher, will appear last.

In addition to selecting two candidates, voters will be asked about renewing the 1999 half-cent sales tax. The tax originally funded the Durango Community Recreation Center construction and development of the Animas River Trail.

If extended, the tax would fund a subsidy for the recreation center and maintenance for parks and recreation facilities. It also would help fund new parks, trails, pedestrian and bicycle improvements and help maintain the city’s 9,000 trees.

If the ballot measure does not pass, about $40 million will have to come out of the general fund for parks and recreation needs, said Councilor Keith Brant.

The election is April 7.
