Rescuers show God works in people

Thank you to the servants who saved my life. Oct. 12, 2013: just another day. I went to work, ran four miles at lunch, drove home from Farmington and later went to sleep. Soon after, my wife noticed that my breathing was raspy and unusual. She did not know it, but I had a suffered a ruptured aneurism in the brain. She called 911. Durango Fire and Rescue responded. I was stabilized, then transported to Mercy hospital. Shortly thereafter, DFR transported me to the airport for an emergency flight to Saint Anthony’s in Denver. In less than 12 hours from the beginning, a small coil was placed in the aneurism by going up the femoral artery. I remained comatose for two to three days, and my wife suffered the agony of not knowing the outcome. Fast forward to now: I have completely recovered.

How do I say thanks to DFR? I know they would all say “You don’t have to thank me. I was just doing my job.” But that doesn’t change things from my viewpoint. Yes, they were just doing their job, but statistically, I am not supposed to be here. I should be either dead or in a condition where communicating this would not be easy.

I am a man of deep spiritual belief. I am quite certain that God intervened. Here is how I think he does it: He works through people. He imposed a serving heart into some people years ago such that they would become humble servants for us. Some became nurses; others became police officers; and others trained in fire and rescue, and ultimately became members of Durango Fire and Rescue. So, maybe my thanks should be to God for imposing that nature into all those people who played their part that day.

Folks, we live in the greatest country in the world. We have people working behind the scenes waiting for that moment when you may need them. Thanks to all of you behind the scenes, from someone who absolutely needed you on Oct. 12, 2013. And especially Durango Fire and Rescue.
