Demons gets to play outside

DHS girls soccer wins season opener

Gym soccer ended Saturday for the Durango High School girls soccer team.

The Demons opened their regular season on a grass field by beating Grand Junction Central 5-0 in Grand Junction.

“It was fun because that was the fist time we had been on grass (this year),” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said. “Grand Junction (Central) had been on grass since they started tryouts. We’ve been in a gym.”

Senior Lauren Milliet, a Colorado College commit, scored twice to lead the team, and Lane Arnwine, Chloe Taylor and Maddie Robertson also scored.

“It was very rewarding to put the ball in the back of the net,” Parker said. “Maddie Robertson scored off a corner kick. It was an in-swinger. Chloe Taylor’s was nice because it was based off combination play and a great ball-through by Lauren Milliet.”

DHS (1-0, 1-0 Southwestern League) controlled possession and attacked the spaces behind Grand Junction Central’s pressure.

“We were able to find a lane and adapt,” Parker said. “The girls showed a great mentality.”

The Demons next will travel to the Front Range for the Kadet Classic hosted by Air Academy in Colorado Springs. It’s the girls version of the same tournament in which Parker took the DHS boys team in the fall.

“Except we’re going to go down there to win it instead of finish second,” Parker said.

DHS will play its first game at 1 p.m. Friday. Durango’s junior varsity team will play at Bayfield’s varsity at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Bayfield.
