The hateful eight

BHS baseball gives up 8 runs in 2 innings of loss

Two rough innings sank the Bayfield High School baseball team in its season opener.

The Wolverines gave up four runs in two separate frames of their 10-5 loss to Piedra Vista’s junior varsity Tuesday.

“We had a couple of innings where we’d let an error or a walk kind of turn into a big inning,” BHS head coach Jonathon Qualls said. “Overall we didn’t play too bad. We let a couple innings get away from us.”

BHS (0-1) struck first with a run in the top of the first inning and three in the top of the third.

The Panthers tied the game in the bottom of the third inning and tacked on four more two innings later to make it 8-4.

They pushed two more across the plate in the bottom of the sixth, and the Wolverines only could muster one run in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Junior Kelton McCoy had three hits for BHS but took the loss on the mound after giving up six earned runs on eight hits in three innings of work.

Colter McMenimen drove in two runs on a 2-for-4 day for the Wolverines.

Errors troubled BHS for a large part of last season, but the Wolverines only had one error Tuesday.

They’re also playing without four players that would have been starting because of Bayfield’s boys basketball team’s advancement in the state tournament.

“It was a good opportunity for some young guys to get a chance that they wouldn’t otherwise. Some guys showed us some things that surprised us and earned them a spot to travel and get a chance to play,” Qualls said. “Definitely some good things out of (Tuesday).”

BHS will take a week of before its next game, a 3 p.m. Tuesday visit to Olathe.
