Hat tricks do the trick for Skyhawk lacrosse

The Skyhawks’ offense broke out in a big way Saturday.

A stretch of six unanswered goals in the second half helped make a close, two-goal game with less than 12 minutes to play look more like a blowout in Pueblo.

The Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team (2-1) responded to its first loss of the season last Sunday with an emphatic 15-7 win at CSU-Pueblo (0-4).

Taylor Cabrera, Ellie Carpenter and Sara McMahon each scored three goals for the Skyhawks to help lead a dominant offensive attack that saw FLC out-shoot the ThunderWolves 34-9. McMahon led the team with 10 shots, and all were on target.

Brooke Galle and Rebecca Miller each had two goals for FLC, and Megan Longtain and Jan Vertner added the other two goals.

Brie Walker started in goal for FLC and earned her first win in her first start of the season. She made two saves. CSU-Pueblo goalie Nicole Burkhauser made 19 saves.

The Skyhawks dominated every phase of the game, winning 19 of 24 draw controls and winning the turnover margin 23-17 and groundballs 21-11.

Longtain led the Skyhawks with five ground balls, and Miller had a team-high four draw controls.

Allye Webb had three goals for the ThunderWolves, and Kiana Kelii added two.

The Skyhawks will look for consecutive wins for the first time this season at 2:30 p.m. Sunday against Adams State (0-1) in Alamosa.
