Miller, Pannell pace Durango swimming in Montrose

The top three teams separated themselves from the rest of the field at the Montrose Invitational.

Durango High School was one of the teams left looking up at Cherry Creek, Montrose and Grand Junction when the meet was over.

The DHS Demons took fifth at the boys swimming meet with 214 team points. Cherry Creek was first with 768, Montrose second with 513 and Grand Junction third with 472. Glenwood Springs scored 233 points to finish just ahead of Durango, who finished ahead of Moffat County’s 126 points.

Durango’s Ben Miller took third in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.01 seconds. Sam Coffman of Cherry Creek won the event in 22.61 seconds. Miller also took sixth in the 100-yard freestyle in 53.87 seconds. Coffman also won that event in 47.34 seconds.

Miller’s teammate Tommy Pannell was eighth in the 100 in 55 seconds.

Coffman continued his domination with a win in the 100-yard fly, finishing in 52.92 seconds. Miller was fifth in 1:00.75.

Pannell added an eighth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:05.24. Cherry Creek’s Daniel Esayev took first in 57.99 seconds.

Pannell also took sixth in the 200-yard free in 2:00.90.

Miller took a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14.54.

Durango’s Iain McCourt was 10th in the 500-yard freestyle in 6:01.61. Cherry Creek’s Hunt Holsomback won the event in 5:16.35.
