DHS girls soccer on a slide

Durango High School soccer isn’t used to losing three games in a row, especially at a big tournament on the Front Range.

But that’s what happened to the Demons’ girls team at the Air Academy tournament, as DHS dropped two games Saturday to finish 0-3 at the two-day tournament.

The Demons played Southwestern League rival Montrose (3-1, 1-0 SWL) at 8 a.m. Saturday and lost 3-1. Lauren Milliet had the only DHS goal, assisted by Lane Arnwine.

DHS was forced to play the early game against its league rival after losing 3-2 to Rampart in the first round Friday.

“Montrose capitalized on our mistakes and pulled away after it was tied at 1,” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said. “I think, if I’m correct, they had only three shots all game and scored on all three. We dominated possession, but in the world of soccer that’s not all that matters.”

Parker said it was unfortunate his team had to play a league foe so early and so far from home, but said it was up to his team to win Friday to avoid that matchup. The two teams will play again Friday.

The Demons (1-3, 1-0 SWL) ended the tournament with another 3-2 loss, this time to Discovery Canyon (1-4).

Arnwine scored both of the Demons’ goals, and both were assisted by Milliet.

“It was a little bit of humble pie, showing our weaknesses and shooting ourselves in the foot all three games,” Parker said of the weekend. “Discovery Canyon had about six shots and scored three goals. We’ve had a hard time keeping the ball out of the back of our net.”

Parker said the team simply has played inconsistent up and down the field and will look to make some corrections before Friday’s game at Montrose.

“The girls are trying to feel their way through and see what kind of team we’re going to be. We need to do everything better,” Parker said.
