BHS girls soccer starts strong

Two games into the season, and Bayfield High School head girls soccer coach Jen Zelinski is excited about what she has seen.

The Wolverines backed up a 2-0 win against Telluride on Friday with a 5-0 victory over Ridgway at home Saturday.

“We don’t take anybody lightly. We gave it our all, and I saw marked improvement even from (Friday’s) game,” Zelinski said. “I got it on film, and I think we can get even better. We have a lot of potential.”

Maddy Duran, a junior, had two goals for BHS.

Senior Andrea Zelinski scored the game’s first goal when she ripped a left-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard box with her left foot directly over the Ridgway goalkeeper’s head. It was assisted by Duran.

Kaylee Gomez scored BHS’ second goal with an assist from Taylor Morris, and Duran got on the board when she scored a breakaway goal assisted by Savannah Kaufmann.

Andrea Zelinski assisted Meaghan Mooney, another senior, for the Wolverines’ fourth goal. Mooney finished with her left foot.

The game’s final goal was scored by Duran and assisted by Andrea Zelinski. Duran finished that one from outside the box.

Kailee Millard was in goal all game for BHS and didn’t face a shot as the Wolverines’ defenders and midfield controlled possession all game.

BHS (2-0) will play another big 3A Region 5 game against Alamosa at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Bayfield.

“It’s a tough game Tuesday. We split with them last year,” coach Zelinski said.
