The article is headlined “Freshmen are picking their majors earlier: Weak job market and high debt loads prompt broad shift away from intellectual exploration.”
After examples from schools such as DePaul University, the University of Texas at Austin and the University of California, Los Angeles, the article ends with FLC, where the number of undeclared freshmen fell to 14 percent this academic year from 34 percent in 2007-2008.
“That sense of purpose can translate into urgency even at schools designed to encourage exploration,” the article says about FLC, giving the example of freshman Zack Bauer, who said he felt the covert pressure to declare “as soon as he walked on campus.” Bauer decided on a double major in environmental studies and theater.
