2 big losses for DHS soccer

The Durango High School girls soccer team suffered two big losses Friday.

Worse than losing to league-rival Montrose for the second time in a week was losing star senior Lauren Milliet, a Division I signee to Colorado College who went down with a shin injury late in the first half.

The Demons (1-4, 1-1 Southwestern League) were up 2-0 in the first half, but their offense went stagnant when Milliet had to exit the game. The result was four unanswered goals by the Indians (5-1, 2-0 SWL), who won 4-2.

“We had a good control over the game. We switched strategy from when we played Montrose last week, and it was working,” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said. “Lauren Milliet was playing really good for us and making our offense potent. She got hurt, and we went stagnant. We lost all potency in the attack. She’s hard to replace, and the girls are worried about her.”

The Demons received goals by junior Lauran Morrissey and sophomore Chloe Taylor in the first half.

Montrose’s first goal came on a penalty kick after DHS was whistled for a handball in the box. The Indians then connected on a long crossing pass to tie the game.

Montrose took the lead and added to it on shots 35 yards and 28 yards out of the box, hitting lasers over the head of the DHS goalkeeper.

Parker said the team is unsure how long Milliet will miss, but she will be out indefinitely until she heals up.

“We want to make sure she is OK and can continue this season,” he said. “We’re really not sure when she’ll be back. Right now, the girls are worried about it, but we are also worried about trying to get better.

“Right now, we’re on a losing streak we haven’t been on in a long time. It’s a slump.”

The Demons will look to end a four-game skid at 11 a.m. Saturday against Fruita Monument.
