Late innings sting IHS baseball

Farmington’s C team ran away from the Ignacio High School baseball team late Friday in Farmington, winning 11-5.

The Bobcats won their opening game of the Piedra Vista Junior Varsity Tournament on Thursday but couldn’t put together a second complete game.

Farmington scored four runs in the top of the first inning, but IHS (1-1) battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning.

Trailing 4-3, Iaasic Peña led off with a single for the Bobcats then reached third on an Andrew Martinez double. Joe Herrera then pushed Peña across the plate with a groundout.

The Scorpions then struck with three runs in the top of the fourth inning, chasing IHS starter Zach Weinreich. He gave up seven runs in 3 2/3 innings pitched, striking out five and walking four.

Farmington added two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to pull away.

Herrera went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Bobcats with three runs batted in.

Martinez also picked up two hits and walked twice to reach base safely in all four at bats.

Tucker Ward was the last Bobcat with two hits in four at bats and scored a run.

Peña went 1-for-3 and scored once.

IHS has one game remaining at the tournament Saturday, but its opponent and the game time has not been determined yet.
