No fundamentals, no fun for Demons

DHS girls soccer loses 5th in row

Mired in a five-game losing streak, Durango High School head girls soccer coach Dalon Parker said the team can point to fundamentals as the reason for the breakdown.

The Demons lost 6-1 at Fruita Monument on Saturday morning. It sent the Demons to their fifth loss in a row, a rare skid for the traditionally strong team.

“We had trouble possessing and overall trouble all over the field,” Parker said. “I don’t really know where to start or end.”

DHS’ lone goal came from junior Maddie Robertson. She blasted a free kick from nearly 50 yards out over the Wildcats’ goalkeeper’s head. It was Robertson’s third goal of the season, all coming from set pieces.

DHS was without senior forward Lauren Milliet, who was injured during a loss at Montrose on Friday night. The Division I signee to Colorado College will be out indefinitely.

The Demons have a fair share of experienced players on the roster. Despite the talent, Parker said the team’s lack of fundamentals have trumped the talent.

“We’re not strong in that department right now at all. It doesn’t matter how much talent you have, if you fundamentals aren’t strong enough you will struggle. We have to get better.”

Parker gave the team the entire upcoming week off for spring break. He hopes they take advantage of the break to clear their heads.

“I’m hoping for something positive from the whole situation,” he said. “They are high school kids, and I hope they relax and come back ready to work.”
