DHS Aerospace lauded at state Capitol

Durango High School Aerospace Team members, from left, Ben Wilbur, Shaylah Wood, Cord Arnold and Mallory Byrd, with coach Dan Garner, were honored Monday at the state Capitol.

The Durango High School Aerospace Design team was invited onto the state Senate floor Monday as part of Colorado Aerospace Day.

Sen. Ellen Roberts of Durango congratulated team members and coaches on the floor by name, coach Dan Garner said in an email Monday. In the House, Rep. J. Paul Brown of Ignacio read the team’s names aloud as a part of the proclamation.

“And to our delight,” wrote Garner, an English teacher at DHS, “the House stood and gave us a standing ovation. After that, much hand shaking ensued.”

The Colorado Space Business Roundtable invited the DHS Aerospace Design team to be a part of Colorado Aerospace Day. Team members also manned a table featuring the program in the Capitol rotunda.

“Overall, we have met umpteen members of the aerospace community from the CU Boulder aerospace program to representatives from Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Ball Aerospace who were all impressed with our endeavors,” Garner wrote. “In a small session with Lt. Gov. (Joseph) Garcia, he singled us out for further accolades, a nice surprise.”

With Garner were Cord Arnold, Mallory Byrd, Ben Wilbur and Shaylah Wood. Garner said they represented the youngest contingent of the aerospace consortium at the event.

Last summer the Durango youths were part of the team championship effort at the World Finals of the International Space Settlement Design Competition at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Durangoans also swept all the individual awards.
