Durango teenager, Aleashea Prescott, 17, honored by Boys & Girls Club

Prescott

Durango’s Aleashea Prescott, 17, is representing local teens as the 2015 Youth of the Year for Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County.

Monday and Tuesday, Prescott joins 14 other teens from Boys & Girls Clubs across the state in a competition at the Denver Art Center. Contestants vying for the state title of 2015 Colorado Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year will give a speech, go through an interview process and submit essays and school transcripts to a judging panel.

The Youth of the Year program is a national Boys & Girls Club of America program that recognizes exceptional teens on a local, state, regional and national level. A Youth of the Year candidate embodies the values of leadership, character, service, academic excellence and healthy lifestyles, the Boys & Girls Club said in a news release.

Locally, the Youth of the Year represents the club throughout the year. During the 2015 Building Great Futures fundraiser April 17, club supporters will be able to meet Prescott.

“Aleashea first came through these doors in 2007 as a shy 10-year-old,” Vaughn Morris, chief professional officer of the Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County, said in the news release. “Over the past seven years, she has become a leader and inspires not only other kids, but the staff, as well.”

Since joining the club in 2007, Prescott has participated in numerous programs and volunteered through the Leader in Training program. Prescott now is a junior staff member and serves as president of Keystone, a teen group dedicated to leadership and community service.

Prescott attends Durango High School and loves to write poetry. She dreams of going to Yale University, the club said.
