DHS seniors win scholarships

Pair were part of more than 2,000 who had applied

Two Durango High School seniors are among 239 students from Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming and Utah who have won 2015 Daniels Fund scholarships.

River Weiss and Liam Hahn were in a field of more than 2,000 applicants for the four-year, annually renewable scholarships. The “last-dollar” scholarships make up any of the students’ unmet needs.

Applicants are judged on character, leadership and commitment to serving their communities. They also must have an SAT score of at least 400 in math and 440 in critical thinking and an ACT score of at least 17.

River, 17, who has been in Durango schools since sixth grade, plans to attend Colorado School of Mines in Golden. He hasn’t chosen a major but is leaning toward engineering physics. He is the son of Rosanna Weiss.

Liam, 17, plans to major in theater, with a minor in directing. He isn’t sure where he will enroll, but he favors Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota or Oklahoma City University. He is the son of William and Salem Hahn.

Kaleb Ryan Lancaster-Milligan and Elizabeth Morgan Wilson from Montezuma-Cortez High School also won Daniels Fund scholarships.

The Daniels Fund has given more than $108 million in undergraduate scholarships to more than 3,000 students. The fund also has a grant program to support the work of nonprofits in fields such as aging, alcoholism, substance abuse, early childhood education, youth development and homelessness.

Two years ago, it awarded more than $520 million in grants and scholarships.

Bill Daniels, for whom the fund is named, was financially successful as a pioneer in cable television. He owned and operated hundreds of systems across the country. Born in Greeley in 1920, Daniels was a combat pilot in World War II and served in the Korean War.

Upon his death in 2000, his estate was transferred to the Daniels Fund, making it one of the largest foundations in the Rocky Mountain region.
