Fort Lewis College Skyhawks softball splits two with Adams State Grizzlies

Hits resulted in plenty of runs early, but they didn’t translate into any late for the Skyhawks.

The Fort Lewis College softball team used 10 runs on 10 hits and five Adams State errors for a 10-5 win in the first of two games Saturday in Alamosa. But the Skyhawks (12-17, 10-8 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) couldn’t turn seven hits and one Grizzlies’ error into any runs in the second game, falling 3-0 to split the first of two doubleheaders this weekend with Adams State (11-15, 9-11 RMAC).

“It really came down to us having clutch hits with runners on base in Game 1, and Game 2 they didn’t come that way,” FLC head coach Kira Zeiter said.

It took FLC a bit to get going in Game 1, with Adams State taking a 2-0 lead after two innings thanks to two key plays by Adams State’s Kalin Johnson, who stole home in the first inning and batted in a run on a single in the second.

But FLC responded to tie the game at 2 in the third inning, when two throwing errors allowed the Skyhawks to score.

“Sometimes those errors come into effect because we have speed on the bases, and that is tough to deal with for defenses,” Zeiter said. “They know they have to make the play quickly, and that can lead to errors.”

Adams State reclaimed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third when Marissa Harmon blasted a solo home run.

After that, the Skyhawks did major damage offensively. Nikki Klepfer hit a two-run single to score Adriana Rosthenhausler and Mandy Owens, and two more runs scored on another error by the Grizzlies in the fourth. FLC tacked on four more runs in the six thanks to a two-run single by Kiley Raica and a bases-loaded walk to Owens. Klepfer also hit a sacrifice fly to score Jeovanna Rios to round out FLC’s scoring.

Raica has seen time as a designated hitter in games she is not pitching this season. Zeiter has been happy to insert her bat into the lineup.

“She’s doing a nice job putting the ball in play where the defense allows her to put it. She also has wheels on the bases,” Zeiter said of Raica.

Victoria Johnson (7-8) earned the win in the circle for FLC. She gave up nine hits and five runs – four earned – over 6 1/3 innings. She walked two and struck out two while hitting one batter. Olivia Goldberg came on and recorded the final two outs for FLC.

Adams State cleaned up its fielding mistakes in Game 2, and pitcher Kaycee Prevedel worked around seven hits to record a shutout. She didn’t issue a free pass and struck out seven.

“We weren’t swinging at pitches in our zone. She did a nice job moving the ball around and had a good rise ball that hit the outside corner,” Zeiter said of Prevedel.

Adams State scored all three of its runs in the third inning. A double by Erica Haugum scored two runs, and a dropped fly ball in right field allowed Haugum to score later in the inning.

Goldberg (0-2) took the loss in the circle for FLC. She lasted five innings and gave up five hits and three runs, only two earned. She struck out four and walked one. Zeiter was pleased with her performance in both games Saturday.

Raica finished the game in the circle for the Skyhawks. She walked one and struck out two and didn’t allow a hit.

FLC will play two more with the Grizzlies on Sunday, with action set to begin at 11 a.m.

“We will come out feeling confident. I expect us to come through with the bats, score lots of runs and let our pitchers and defense coast more and feel more relaxed,” Zeiter said.
