Durango track sweeps up personal bests at Broomfield Shootout

A Durango High School track and field squad limited in numbers by spring break didn’t disappoint on the Front Range.

The Demons registered two top-five finishes and a slew of other personal records.

Miranda Gallegos cleared 16 feet in the long jump for the third consecutive meet, hitting 16-8 for second place.

“This will likely rank Miranda in the top 10 for the season (to date) and should qualify (her) for the state meet in mid-May,” DHS head coach David McMillan said in an email to The Durango Herald. “Not only did Miranda lead on the boards, she is developing into a delightfully strong team leader.”

Josh Hobson hit his personal records in the triple jump (38-8), long jump (18-8) and high jump (5-10).

Lucas Baken also jumped 5-10, one inch better than his height.

“I give these kids credit as the jumping event went on for a couple of hours with over 40 jumpers, and to stay focused that long takes a special athlete,” McMillan said. “Both Baken and Hobson were juggling other events as they waited to jump.”

Vincente Jimenez and John Lee both ran the 300-meter hurdles in 44.86 seconds to win their respective heats.

Paxton Scott ran the 400-meter in 54.97 second.

Durango’s 4x800-meter team of Emily Fogel, Edwards-Colsman, Abby Scott and Shannon Maloney just missed on a state qualifying time, taking fourth in 10:12.

Nicholas Turco finished 10th in the elite heat of the 3,200-meter run in 10:11, a personal record at altitude.

“I was really proud of Nicholas’ effort in this race, especially coming after a grueling 1,600 meters only a couple of hours earlier,” McMillan said. “Nicholas keeps getting stronger and is a couple of seconds per lap from qualifying for state.”

Josh Thompson threw the discus 112 feet for a personal best.

DHS next will compete at the Bayfield Invitational on Saturday in Bayfield.

“After another long day at the track, the Demon squad can stand tall and be proud of their season thus far,” McMillan said. “We are building a solid platform for good performances in the next few weeks when our local competition schedule heats up.”
